Whistle Stop – High River, Alberta

Nothing excites me more than small town cafes and diners and when I heard of Whistle Stop Diner as a little train dining cart restaurant, I knew I needed to make it a first stop! This adorable dining cart was so much fun, and the staff and food was phenomenal!

I found on their special menu their Cinnamon Bun Pancake which I knew I needed to have the moment I read it on the board. It was exceptional as it’s one of the things I love most. It was a very amazing treat.

I also like a great steak so we ordered a Steak and Egg special and there’s something so fun about steak and eggs. There’s absolutely nothing wrong steak and eggs, especially from Whistle Stop diner!

This was a fabulous dining experience, the food was fantastic, the experience was like nothing we’ve tried so far!

Colossi’s Coffeehouse – High River, Alberta

It’s the Christmas season, and it’s the time of year I have a lot of time on my hands alone so it’s my time to relax and work on this! I am sure we all know by now my lover for little towns and coffee shops so lets start this one in High River, Alberta at Colossi’s Coffeehouse which was actually a stop RIGHT after I ate at the Whistle Stop diner as I wasn’t ready to leave.

As this was already an after lunch treat, I wasn’t hungry at all, so we just sat and chit chatted for awhile until I wanted to leave. I remember sitting here with my girlfriend on the line as she was trying to waste time because she was stuck getting her hair done. The coffee here was fantastic, the atmosphere was cozy and the people were fantastic!

This was definitely a great place to stop in for either a quick socializing coffee or even to hunker down and get some work done! This is a spectacular coffeehouse and I love the locally owned and love shop that has so much pride and passion.

Evelyn’s Memory Lane Cafe – High River, Alberta

We’ve been meaning to drive out to High River, AB to eat at Evelyn’s Memory Lane Cafe for quite some time now – basically after I first heard of them on Foot Network Canada’s “You Gotta Eat Here”. So, we had an afternoon where we didn’t know where we wanted to eat – and here we were!

We sat down by the diner bar and was greeted immediately. The entire team of staff was very attentive, friendly and quick! We started with a bowl of Beef & Barley Soup which was loaded with barley and had tons of soft and tender pieces of beef. I don’t normally love thick soups full of “stuff”, but this one I really enjoyed!

We also wanted to try their Strawberry Milkshakes as I love milkshakes from small towns. I claim they’re different and much more delicious! I was right – it was rich and creamy with the nice consistency and enough strawberry flavours. I believe I read somewhere stating they make their own ice cream, but I’m not sure…

Of course, if there’s perogies on the menu, chances are I will order it. I had an order of their Perogies which was absolutely amazing. Both the skin and filling was perfect and then with the onions and bacon – you couldn’t go wrong anywhere! It was definitely one of the best!

I ordered off their daily special and it actually came with a Cabbage Roll as well. I wasn’t sure about it at first, but once you cut into it – the world of aweseomeness came through. The texture of the filling was nice and it wasn’t dry at all. It had meat and rice in it and it was firm, while the cabbage was sweet and tender. It was nice!

From there, we ordered their Beef Stew also off their daily special. It came in a pretty good size bowl with almost a beef soup looking stew. It was still very hearty and delicious and tons of beef flavour. The vegetables were cooked perfectly as they were tender but not mush! They have the best bread as well!

Just in case we thought we didn’t eat enough, we decided to try a slice of their Pumpkin Pie and it was special! It was darker than pumpkin pie I’m use to seeing, but it was a nice texture. The crust was excellent and we devoured this dessert!

Overall, this was such a fabulous place I look forward to returning. It was a lot of fun, the food was top notch, the service was excellent and the prices were amazing! So, no complaints from anywhere! Can’t wait to return to see the train go around the restaurant again!

High River Inn Restaurant – High River, Alberta

We were actually trying to find some dinner in Longview where the place of choice didn’t have space for us. We started our journey home when we decided to make a stop in High River – where we found High River Inn Restaurant and it was a neat place. The owner was really pleased we were there, and she kept explaining to us that the food she has here caters to small town people. No problem – I know and I love it!

Although the place appears small, it’s actually very spacious inside with a decent size buffet. This place got pretty busy in here as well, but I don’t think you’re going to have to worry about making reservations as there’s lots of tables and chairs. The chef constantly puts out fresh food, so the smorg doesn’t go empty.

As this was our dinner, I allowed myself to help myself! Serving after serving, I really enjoyed the food here. I especially enjoyed the little conversations with the owner and she enjoyed talking to us in Cantonese as she doesn’t get a lot of Chinese speaking people at her place.

Overall, the place was really clean, the staff was really friendly, the food was really good! There’s nothing to complain about! It was an enjoyable dinner and I really like their eggroll. Most places have spring rolls, so this was a nice treat!
